The U.S. Navy method is accurate within ±3–4% for most people. Results are based on circumference measurements and statistical regression formulas. For more precise measurements, consider DEXA scanning or hydrostatic weighing. About the US Navy Body Fat Method

The US Navy circumference method estimates body fat percentage from simple measurements: neck circumference, waist circumference (at the navel), and hip circumference (women only). It was developed by the US Navy for fitness assessments and provides a reasonable estimate without specialized equipment.

Accuracy

The Navy method has an accuracy of roughly ±3–4% compared to DEXA scanning. It's more accurate than BMI for distinguishing lean vs. fat mass, but less accurate than hydrostatic weighing or DEXA. Use it as a tracking tool to monitor trends over time rather than as a definitive measurement.
